conversation_log:the_nature_of_the_soul

This scene was logged by Teddy. It takes place on a stormy night in Newhome when Junior came to visit Shen, and both encountered Robot Outmen for the first time. The conversation takes an interesting direction as three highly unusual individuals discuss the soul and the nature of existence.

A Cloudy Evening in Newhome

Junior nods, a bit awed. “I was right, robot has good ideas. And he's not even smug about it! Got a good AI program on this one, he's pretty cool…”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “This one has no AI.”

ShadowTalon counts off. “One, you know me as Shen. Two, you were talking with Kulgree. There are not all that many who both know me and Kulgree like Out does. So that is why I made that my guess.”

Junior headtilts. “If you have no artificial intelligence, how are you.. Functioning? I don't get this robot stuff, and I know a couple andriods. Shit.”

Unit 119165 Outmen starts playing some flute music through his sonics as he nods. He says “I have the mind of a person instead of an AI.”

ShadowTalon grins. “So I was right.” He nods at Out's response. “That sounds like an interesting story there.”

Unit 119165 Outmen stops playing the music. “Try being split into three different locations. mind, body, and soul seperated.”

ShadowTalon blinks and winces slightly. “Ouch… Although… A soul…” He glances at himself. “There are times when I wonder if those even exist. It's even more odd to be talking to a robot about a soul. Then again, you are no ordinary robot.”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “That I am not.”

Junior insists with a strange certainty in his eyes, “Souls exist. They're just difficult for the mind to comprehend.”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “It depends on the kind of mind. Some minds are able to not only comprehend, but understand.”

Junior ehs and shakes his head. “Maybe they think they do, but souls trancend what the physical mind can perceive. There's always something more… I like to think you get those last pieces when you die for good, if you give a shit to notice.”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “And what of those that have died and come back?”

ShadowTalon grins and nods. “Good. Just… odd thoughts there. And an even odder turn for the conversation.”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “It tends to happen with many beings.”

Junior points to Out. “Doesn't count! When your soul moves on to whatever the end may be, that's your chance to grasp what's happening! If you end up back at this plane of existence, you didn't really get to the end!”

Junior is, of course, wild mass guessing like anybody else. This is just his beliefs, it's most likely he's dramatically wrong.

Unit 119165 Outmen says “Would you say that to someone who has had a soul stuck to a demon and seen what to is like?”

Junior nods with conviction. “Yes. Still a life. Not the end. The end is the end. If you could 'come back' with that knowledge, it wouldn't be as big of a secret as it is. That's common sense.”

ShadowTalon just listens, looking back and forth. “Maybe it is simply something that can't be put into words, or expressed, even by those who have experienced it.”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “Then you may stay with your beliefs. I will not try to pursuade you one way or another. It is hard to express, even to those who have experienced it, for it is always a little different for each.”

Junior nods to Shen. “Yeah, I think so. It's not really something you're meant to know in life. There's no point. And I think it would make your life feel pointless if you knew it while you lived, so it's kept on purpose, no matter how hard people vainly strive for it. So it's better not to know.” Blissful ignorance? “I don't think people should care as much as they do! Just be mindful actions have consequences, and live! Stop thinkin' so much…”1)

ShadowTalon grins, a faint glint of light showing off his fangs. “If we don't think, are we truely alive? Maybe balance would be a better ideal to go for. Think and act.”

Junior bahs. “Thinking and living have nothing to do with each other. Pleanty of squishy ameba things you'll never see have no brain, yet thrive. Thinking is just what makes people. ..Probably.”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “People are always thinking. The need is to great for a complex mulitycelled organism.”

Junior seems to grudgingly agree with the robot this time, allowing a disappointed 'blaaaah' to preceed his answer. “Yeah, unfortunately. Doesn't it seem like some kind of torture device implanted into us though? People's makers must be cruel.”

ShadowTalon laughs. “I've actually seen those. And I've met many people who could think and didn't. At least not much… And are we even people? Many would call Junior and I monster, and you a machine…”

Junior waves a hand at Shen. “Again, if it thinks, it's people enough in my book. Robot, monster like us, average human… Our brains have too much in common not to regard together.”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “That does disregard the roots of who we are. There are guildlines to find beings with upper levels of thinking. To tell if one is sentience life or not.”

Junior taps his head in example. “If it can think, real self-aware thoughts, it's a kind of 'person.' I'm sure of it. Physical characteristics mean little. A shell is a shell, superficial. It's the brain-goo that makes a difference.”

ShadowTalon tilts his head and nods slowly. “Thinking can easily turn into a torture device. Although we often torture ourselves with it, as well as others.”

He points at Out. “Various forms of intelligence?”

Unit 119165 Outmen says “Exactly Shen.”

Junior lolls his head back and forth, giving Out's statement due consideration. “Self-awareness. Whether we 'recognize' it or not, if it knows it is, and it knows we're others, it's a person of sorts.” I think, therefore I am?

ShadowTalon nods.

Unit 119165 Outmen says “That is the basics of the guideline. Self-presevation is another attribute to the basics of it.”

Junior stares up at the nasty stormy sky for a while, then shakes his head at the others like he's woken from a trance. ”…Why the hell were we talking about this, again? I-I can't remember what point we were getting at or why…“

Unit 119165 Outmen says “It started because of Shen's doubts about a soul.”

1)
He's an enormous hypocrite, just for the record.
